ODK Finished!

My third novel, OF DEMONS AND KEEPERS, is officially finished! Well...at least the writing process :)

It ended just over 62K and is now going through the first round of edits. Boyfriend read it a couple weeks ago after I was completely stuck and at the point of adding stupid scenes just to figure out what was missing. Turns out, it wasn't missing anything! I was just so obsessed with word count that I let my imagination get out of control.

So here we are, 62K later. I'm happy with it.

I've started compiling a list of literary agents. Once I get it all edited and research the agents a little bit more, I'll start drafting query letters and sending those out.

This is the hard part.

Do I Belong Here?

Hello, everyone. If you do not remember me, I am the “owner” of this blog. Hah! It’s been quite a while (almost a year, actually) since my last post. I have a lot more to write about now that my life has gotten into a routine again (shouldn’t it be the other way around?). Let’s recap real quick, shall we?

Last year:

-Moved out on my own

-Graduated college with Bachelor’s Degree in English, Minor in Writing

-Got a full-time job where I had been working part-time (not using college degree)

-Given lots more responsibility, including a Stage Crew to manage

-Now working side-by-side with Boyfriend

-Lots of OT

-NaNo 2010

This year:

-Moved apartments

-Cat got real sick and was in/out of the vet for a couple months

-Lots of debt later, she’s doing very well and on steady medication (poor baby)

-I’m on a make-it-from-scratch kick

-I live to eat

-Boyfriend and I are coming up on 1.5 years together ... I’m waiting for the “question”

-He may join the Air Force (fully supportive if he does)

-I want to move to Europe

-Boyfriend gave me August 31st deadline to finish my favorite writing project, Of Demons and Keepers, which I’ve been working on for over 2 years now

-Next week, we are going to Colorado and I’m going to treat half of the vacation like a writing retreat - Boyfriend knows and supports this (he’ll probably be asleep anyway)

Wow. Looking back on it like that, I don’t feel like I’ve done much. Well, technically, that’s just the general overview of everything. Of course I’ve accomplished a lot of other things (reading fantastic new authors’ books, cooking, learning new things, good quality time with Boyfriend, new life experiences...), but you get the main idea.

Now currently, I’m working on something I did NOT accomplish last year because of school and my “new” job: reading 50 books in 2010. I didn’t get very far at all. This year I’m trying to do the same thing, but without the number goal. I’d just like to read as much as I can while still having a life. Boyfriend bought me a Nook for Christmas last year and I have not been able to put it down. I always wanted an eReader, but constantly second guessed my decision to actually follow through. Finally, I bit the bullet and told Boyfriend, yes, I definitely want one, and don’t let me change my mind. So we went out and bought the NookCOLOR, and BOY, OH, BOY! Let me just say... if you do not have one and are thinking about getting one, GET ONE. I love it more than anything else I own. The only thing that I would add to it, is being able to hook up a keyboard so I don’t have to drag around my computer. They don’t have a lot of apps out for it yet (Android is always really slow about that, it seems), but I didn’t really buy the device for games and such anyway. I bought it for the eReader.

Now in my list up top, I mentioned that I’m currently trying to finish OF DEMONS AND KEEPERS by August 31st. I’m definitely going to make that deadline. I really am pumped about finishing this book. Currently I’m in the nitty gritty part where I have the skeleton and am lacking the flesh, muscle, veins, organs, etc. I’m almost 60K into the novel and just need to add in everything that’s lacking. I know that’s not very specific, but maybe this will explain it better than I can. After all, I’m still learning....

Recently I found some blog posts by Stacia Kane. She talks about how she writes a novel in three acts - 30K for each act. There are a total of three blog posts where she delves into how she approaches writing her novels using three acts. It’s quite genius and opened up my mind to a lot of new ideas. Follow this link and see what you think.

Also, while you’re there, look into her Book section on her website. Her Chess Putnam (Downside series) books are AMAZING. Did you hear me? They’re... FANTASTIC. I don’t know how else to say it. Frankly, all three current books (there will be six total) kept me up at night for two reasons: 1) I couldn’t stop reading. 2) I was scared. Now, okay, it doesn’t take a lot to scare me, but it does take damn good writing to make me feel anything. And Stacia Kane is a damn good writer. Check her out for yourself. And if you sign up to be a member of the Downside Army, she’ll email out newsletters every now and then and sometimes includes member-only snippets of her stories. I promise, you won’t regret reading her work.

Okay, I’m finished ranting for today. I need to go make some word count before Boyfriend gets here to help me cook dinner, then it’s MasterChef time! Wooh!

I'm Writing Again ... Surprise!

All right, I have some exciting news. Are you ready for it? .... I don't think you are, but I'm telling you anyway.

Drum roll please.

............................

I'm partnering with my mom to ....... Write a Cookbook!! hahaha

Yeah, you weren't ready for that. I knew it.

Reasoning? Well, I've been in a writing slump for about 10 months now because of my current job. It takes all of my creativity out of me and I haven't found a solid way to get it back yet. Also, I've been on my own now (out of my parents' house, that is) for the better part of 5 months and ever since moving out, I've found my love of cooking. I experiment, try new things, but mostly I make meals out of left over ingredients that I didn't use in my single serving meal from the night before. I don't enjoy left overs so I just make one serving of the meal and use the left over ingredients for something else. It's quite inventive, if I do say so myself. Which I did! I am!

Now, I have questions for you all. Being the up and coming generation that you are, what are some of your favorite meals, snacks, drinks, etc? What I'm going to do to start with is get different ideas, make them, but make them healthier! Without losing the yumminess, of course.

So come on, it's your turn! Comment with your favorites!

One Last Thing - a short story

Hello, everyone. Here is the short story I promised. This is the second draft so feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Toby Neelson walked around the mall for hours. They were going to see a movie, but Toby didn’t have enough money for a ticket so Ashlee said she would just hang out with him in the mall until their friends got finished with the movie since Avery was her ride home.
“Thanks for hanging out with me. I wanted to talk to you about something anyway,” Toby said. He squeezed Ashlee’s hand and she smiled at him with that grin he loved so much. There was just something about the way her cheeks puffed up to make room for such a big, beautiful smile.
“What’s up?” She asked.
They didn’t walk through any stores, just around the main part of the mall – that walkway which leads to all of the stores and was always cluttered with people and retail kiosks. Ashlee was a sucker for kiosks. She never bought anything, but she couldn’t walk past them without providing her attention to the sales.
“I want to thank you for taking me with you to church every week. I really like it there.” He didn’t look at her.
She did a little half skip and said, “You’re welcome,” without looking at him.
“The preacher last week, what he said about having a purpose and always thinking about how we can help other people, that reminded me of my sister.” His voice cracked on the last word. Ashlee’s expression saddened.
“I’m sorry about your family, Toby. I really wish there was something I could do to help.” She looked up at him and he gave her a small, sincere smile.
“Don’t worry about that. What I was getting at was that last week’s message has convinced me to do whatever I can to protect Isabel,” he said.
“What are you going to do?” Ashlee asked.
“I’m not completely sure just yet. I still don’t have a full plan but whatever I do, I’ll make sure that my parents can never touch her again.” He looked straight ahead of them, oblivious to Ashlee biting her lip.
“And you too, right?” You’ll make sure they can never hurt you again, right?” Ashlee asked.
He nodded slowly. “Yes, I’ll make sure they can never hurt me again.”
She stopped walking and he looked at her. “Toby, you’re scaring me. I don’t want you to end up in jail or something.”
He smiled briefly at her worry. “I won’t end up in jail, I promise.” He bent down a couple inches and kissed her gently on the forehead as her eyes closed and her lips went soft.
*************
Walking home, Toby thought about the ridiculous possibilities that lay before him. For as long as he could remember, his mother had been married to his loser of a step-dad. For as long as he could remember, he had endured their awful lifestyle alone. The cigarette burns, stepping on glass in the middle of the living room from the latest anger rage, the constant screams when the beer supply was gone and then having to go to the corner gas station to get more beer so he could sleep at night.
It was a constant battle for Toby – a constant battle not to run away. He always believed his family would overcome their awful situation, but the latest issue was a little too much for him.
His mother had been sleeping around, according to his step-dad’s yells and accusations, and had gotten pregnant. She had the baby and now Toby had a little sister named Isabel. Isabel was constantly ignored even worse than Toby had been. Of course, Isabel required more attention. She wasn’t even a year old. How she was still alive, Toby wasn’t sure. It was up to him to keep her alive and he wasn’t sure how well that was working.
She was still an infant, yes, but she was too small. Most babies are chubby but Isabel had zero fat on her. It scared him to think that one day she wouldn’t wake up. He would cry if that happened. She meant the world to him.
But now he needed to figure out how to protect her. She needed to grow up and have a normal life, one completely opposite from his.
Toby took a deep breath before opening the front door to his home. It was a pleasant day outside but there was tremendous darkness in his mind. He dreaded going home. Always. But especially today.
When he opened the door a blast of screams greeted his ears. Isabel was crying again and no one was listening. He shut the door almost inaudibly behind him, not wanting to bring the same wrath that had probably made Isabel cry. In the living room he saw his little sister's red face that always made his heart break. His step-dad was asleep and drooling on the couch, a leg and arm hanging over the side. When Isabel saw her brother she cried harder.
He picked her up and the screams ceased immediately as her head rested in the concave where his shoulder passes to his neck.
The step-dad rolled over and grunted, his eyes remaining closed. Toby grabbed a beer and a premade bottle of formula from the fridge. He put the beer on the broken table next to the sleeping drunk.
Then Toby took Isabel into her room at the very end of the left hall, right across from his room. Toys were everywhere, covering every surface. They served as a distraction for their parents' sake. Isabel didn't like any of them; all she wanted was to be held and loved.
He cleared toys from a section of the stained, brown carpet and sat down, using his loving intuition to feed her the bottle to soothe her aching stomach. She drank it so fast that he thought she would just throw it back up, but somehow it stayed down. When she was finished, although probably not satisfied, he rocked her to sleep by simply moving his body back and forth. Within minutes Isabel was drooling and sleeping with a smile on her face.
He put her in his place to sleep and went to his room. Before shutting the door he noticed the beer on the living room table was gone. He shook his head and held tears in his eyes, then shut his bedroom door.
Throwing himself on the bed, he lit a joint and inhaled deeply, trying to escape. He lay there for hours, trying to come up with a solution, but he could only think of one.
The sun eventually went down, taking the light out of his room.
He relit the joint and took another drag. The pain began to numb. That was good. He had made up his mind and needed to keep his body as numb as possible.
He reached over to his dresser and grabbed the phone. He started to dial Ashlee’s number, but hung up before it rang a second time. He didn’t want to put her in the middle of what he was about to do. He loved her and wanted her to remember him the way he had looked into her eyes a few hours before. He set the phone down, took a deep breath, and grabbed the hammer next to his bed before he could change his mind.
*************
The next day, a policeman knocked on the Neelsons’ front door. When no one answered he radioed for backup. A call had come into 911 about an hour ago. A frightened, hysterical young girl had called and told the emergency operator that she feared for her boyfriend’s life. She informed the operator that her boyfriend had been abused his entire life and now had a little sister who was also being abused and neglected. Apparently she thought that her boyfriend was going to take action and do anything he could to protect his sister and himself and that his parents would hurt him in the process. The reason she had finally called was because he wasn’t answering his home phone, which was always answered.
So now a police officer banged on the boyfriend’s front door in order to make sure that all was well in the house. Backup was on its way just incase. He had been in this sort of situation before and it never ended pretty.
Within eleven minutes, three police cars and an ambulance pulled in front of the house. With guns drawn, the police knocked on the door. When no one answered, they entered forcefully and announced themselves loudly.
The step-dad didn't stir. The authorities shouted at him with guns pointed but he didn’t respond.
“Check him,” the Lieutenant commanded.
A male officer to his right holstered his firearm and stepped toward the suspect on the couch. He checked for a pulse and shook his head. When he examined closer, he noticed that his throat was slashed, dried blood caked on the suspect’s front. On the couch next to him lay a piece of bloody, broken glass.
A female officer came out from the right hallway and reported that a woman was also dead on the floor in the bedroom, her throat also cut.
“What do you make of this?” The Lieutenant mused out loud.
"Lieutenant," called an officer from the other part of the house. "You need to see this."
The Lieutenant answered the call, walked past another officer holding a screaming female baby, and into another room.
"We found him like this," another officer informed. "No pulse."
The Lieutenant saw the teenage boy lying in a pool of blood on the floor, a hammer sticking out of the back of his skull.
“I guess the girlfriend was right,” he said somberly. He walked back into the living room to join the other officers. “Inform the mortician and see what you can piece together. Call child protective services and get them to find a home for the baby. Anything should be better than this awful place.”
Simple Thoughts.
Do you go through life sometimes on an unknown journey, but you actually think that you know what you're doing? Well, here's the difficult thing to hear: you have absolutely NO idea what you're doing. None of us really do. It's a matter of time before the next bend in our lives happen, but until then who knows where we're going to end up? We're just silly humans after all.
There have been times in my life where I thought I knew exactly what I was doing and thought I was handling myself very well. Wrong-O!! I never had a clue what I was doing, I just liked to think that I did because I wanted to have all the answers. But I didn't and still don't. I never will. I'm just a silly human after all.
But what I do know is that I'm content and happy all at the same time. Usually I'm only one or the other, or just none at all, but now it's silly because I'm SO happy.
I hope you are all having a really great start to Spring Break. I will, hopefully, finish my short story this next week and post it on here for feedback. You guys are awesome, keep it up :)
This New Life of Mine
HEY!
So I'm officially all moved into my new apartment. Well, except for the random times when my mother comes over with a whole new load of decor lol. It's great having parents who have nice things that they give you when you're a broke college student :)
My apartment is really cute. My color theme is orange, dark green, black, and beige (all the walls are bland beige). It's turning out well. My cat had issues the first few days, but now she's running around crazily like she owns the place. I thought I would have issues sleeping alone, but I haven't yet (knock on wood). I was expecting that because I've never slept alone in a house before except when my parents were out of town. It's nice.
I'm still so busy with school at the moment. Spring break is next week and I'm looking forward to catching up on homework. I don't like taking it one day at a time. I'd rather be a day ahead at least. Right now I'm working on a podcast project for one of my classes. We have to show that we can use GarageBand. It's a really crappy app, just incase you were wondering.
I'm writing a short story for one of my other classes. It's a tragedy, of course. I like tragedies. Once I finish it then maybe I'll post it :)
I have done zero reading. Sadness.
Other than that, nothing super huge.
Oh well, other than the fact that I have a boyfriend now! lol
Take care, everyone.
11 Days
Okay, children! And ... others.
I have officially picked a plot for my NaNo. Pretty much, it's the middle ages and faeries take over the world through zombies. No, I did not plan on it being humor, it's purely fantasy ... well, okay, let's be real. There's definitely going to be humor :)
There are 11 days and counting. Are you as excited as I am? I seriously doubt that.
My first step is to shop for my Care Package Partner's first surprise. Then I am going to start redesigning my writing space to make it more inspiring. Any ideas? I'm going to add a cork-board or the like. Anything you guys wanna add that you think really helps in your writing space?
You guys rock, btw.
XOXO
I Yearn For You, Creature From Hell
I hate neglecting my blog. It's quite terrible. I'm working a lot at work this week. At least, it feels as if I'm working a lot. The Maximized Living Makeover is this Saturday and I'm getting ready for that. We also hired a new girl to work the front desk with me so she is in the process of training. It's hard though. Mike (the office manager) and I were in such a great routine with each other that now the world is turned upside down again. I feel more right as to my position than I did when the last girl was working the front desk with me, but now I feel as if I have to babysit everything. I know Mike and I are dedicated to this job, but I wish everyone was. I'm starting to think that most people won't be, especially if it's inconvenient for them.
I'm so tired. Is that complaining? No, it's just a fact. I'm exhausted. I have a yearning to write some of The Great Funnel tonight and I think I will. Let me clean up my laundry from, oh, last week, and maybe I'll be able to hash out some chapters tonight and post an excerpt tomorrow. Cross your fingers. I'm so behind on house work.
